Florida Mother Receives 20-Year Sentence For Firing Warning Shots

Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville, Fla. was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday for firing warning shots against her allegedly abusive husband.

This is the most outrageous thing I have ever heard and I hope that this woman will be pardoned by the governor or something done to mitigate this outrageous sentence. I have been reading about the sentencing guidelines and the “three strikes you are out” (three felonies and you go to jail for life) and I think in the main they are fair, but this is a travesty of justice if ever there was one.

People get less than that for rape, murder, child abuse…and many many other things than firing a warning shot into a wall.

  1. Joyce, this is a thoroughly disturbing verdict AND sentence. As a survivor of DV&A, I can say that ANY victim who has been repeatedly abused is going to snap, at some point. Marissa Alexander didn’t “snap” and kill her abusive spouse. She fired warning shots. And, HE is the victim?

I hope that she gets some serious legal representation in an appeal. What an OUTRAGEOUS sentence!!!

And, the abuser gets a green light to abuse the next victim in line – carte blanche. He’ll milk that cow until it runs dry, you better believe it. The abuser is now the “poor victim.” Oh, brother…………

  2. Well, I hope that something “saves” this poor woman…about the only thing I can think of is if the governor “pardons” her but maybe her attorney can help in some way, all I can do for her is to pray.
